Pet Identification Week

April 19-25th is National Pet ID Week. A week to raise awareness on the importance of having your dogs and cats ID's in the event they ever get lost, stolen, or go missing.

There are several methods of  ID'ing your pets.

1) Tags for the collars/harness
2) Tattoos usually done in the ear, or inner thigh.
3) Microchip implanted under the skin.

Of all the methods of identifying your pet - a Microchip is the most effective and permanent.
Over time, tattoos can fade and can be difficult to read due to legibility and location.
Tags and collars can be lost, fall off, or taken off.
Microchips are permanently inserted under the skin at the base of the neck and is easily read by a reader which every veterinary clinic, pet shelter, and humane society has on hand.
When a pet is microchipped, the information is entered into a data base which makes it easy to locate the owners.
This helps get your dog or cat back home to you much sooner.

To have your Dog or Cat Microchipped, Call us at

Heartworm & Lyme Disease Prevention Month

April is Heartworm and Lyme Disease prevention Month.

At Royal City Animal Hospital in Guelph, ON, we have seen many cases of Heartworm and Lyme disease positive dogs over the years, and each year the numbers are growing.

We believe testing your dog annually is the best way to help detect, and prevent the disease.
Part of our annual Wellness examinations, we offer a comprehensive blood testing panel which includes test for both Heartworm and Lyme Disease.
This time of year, we do so much blood work on the dogs in the Guelph area, that our laboratory offers us special discounts on the price of running panels. This is to encourage more and more owners to have their pets tested.
We pass those savings on to our clients.

Call our Veterinary Clinic today to schedule your dog in for a comprehensive annual health and wellness examination - including blood work.

Caturday Night Fever

At Royal City Animal Hospital in Guelph, we love cats, and we appreciate their unique behaviour quirks.
Instead of expecting a cat to not be a cat, we work hard to accommodate our feline patients and meet them more on their terms.

Cats feel stress and anxiety at a much more intense level than most people realize. Being creatures of habit, and very territorial animals - they aren't fond of changes. When you bring your cat to the Veterinarian, there is a lot going on that will cause your cat stress - The carrier, the car ride, the noises, the moving around....and the dogs that might be in the clinic.

We do everything we can to help minimize their stress.
One way is to schedule specific days where we only offer appointments for cats, so they don't have to see dogs.
We call these days "CATURDAYS" and these dedicated times are:

The 2nd Friday of every month - from 10 am - 1pm,
The Last Tuesday of the month from 3pm - 7Pm

If you would like to schedule your Cat in for an examination with Our veterinarian Dr Barbara Drewry during one of these "Cat-Friendly" appointment times, please call our Clinic.
We would also love to tell you about the other ways we work to make our clinic a more Positive environment for our Feline patients.

Dog Biscuit Day

Monday February 23rd is "DOG BISCUIT  APPRECIATION DAY"

At Royal City Animal Hospital in Guelph, we know how important giving your dog a treat is to the Human-Animal Bond. It is a great way to reward your dog for good behaviours, to help train them, and to show love (although treats for love is not ideal).

We offer a good variety of Dog biscuits that are healthy, tasty, and low in calorie so that treating your dog doesn't always mean adding to their weight.

One such biscuit is Rayne Clinical Nutrition's Apple & Pumpkin biscuits, which contain whole ingredients, no corn, no wheat, and no animal proteins. This means they are an excellent choice for dogs with any condition including food sensitivities, medical conditions, or weight loss program.

Ask our veterinary team at Royal City Animal Hospital about these nutritious and delicious Whole Food treats for your Dog.

LOVE YOUR PET DAY

Friday February 20th is "LOVE YOUR PET" day.

We know everyone loves their pet every day, so why celebrate a special day, right?

Like Valentines Day, it is a day we set aside to Show our dog, cat, or other pets how much they mean to us.

I know there are days in my life when things seem rough, all I need to forget the bad and see the good in the world is to look in the adoring face of my beloved dog.

He knows when I am down, angry, sad, or stressed, and he knows exactly what to do. He puts on that super cut face, and stares into my eyes. With that one small gesture - I know Life is wonderful.

I Love My pets.

If you love your pets - send us a photo of the 2 of you together so we can share on our Facebook page. (rcahtechs@rogers.com)

Are Valentines Day and Easter Dangerous for your Pet?

Many people love to celebrate Valentines day, and Easter with sweet treats like Chocolate.

While Chocolate may taste good and even have some health benefits for People, the same is not true for pets.

Dogs and cats can get very sick, and even die from eating chocolate. Depending on the size of the animal, the type of chocolate consumed (white, milk, dark, or Bakers), and the amount of it consumed - there can be some serious health issues for your dogs and cats.

This website has a great tool to help guide you to know how chocolate can affect pets.

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2007/10/pets/chocolate-chart-interactive

IF your pet ever eats chocolate of any kind - the first thing you need to do is call your veterinarian right away. They can advise you if it is minor or if it is a cause for serious concern.

Enjoy your Valentines Day and Easter but keep your pets safe.

Valentines Day and Pets

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, so I thought I would take this opportunity to remind everyone of the hidden danger this day to celebrate love can bring -Chocolate

Every year for Valentine’s Day, many people receive gifts of chocolates from their special someone not realizing that this gift can be deadly to their other special someone – their dog.  Chocolate contains a chemical compound called theobromine, which is a stimulant that is found in the cocoa bean. This chemical is easily processed by humans  with no affect on our bodies, however dog’s metabolize this compound much more slowly and as a result it can lead to very serious health effects. Some of the symptoms of chocolate toxicity are vomiting and diarrhea, tremors, heart problems, seizures, and death. The severity of the problem depends upon a few factors; such as the size of the dog, the amount of chocolate consumed, and the type of chocolate that was eaten. White chocolate has much less theobromine in it than dark or baker’s chocolate and therefore the amount needed to cause a problem is greatly reduced.
Keep all chocolate out of reach from your dog – even the best dogs can be tempted by a tasty treat.
If your dog has eaten any chocolate – regardless of type, please consult with your veterinarian to ensure immediate attention can be given to your dog before the toxin has a chance to take effect. Your veterinarian will have better success in treating your dog for chocolate toxicity if immediate action is taken. Do not delay treatment or any reason.  When you call your veterinarian, be prepared to tell them what type of chocolate your dog ate, approximately how much was eaten, and when it was eaten.

Enjoy the day with your special someone – and your 4-legged valentine as well.
