Pet Nutrition. ASK YOUR VETERINARY TEAM

When it comes to your pet's nutritional needs, talk to the people who know your pet best. Your Veterinary Health Care Team.
Your Veterinary health care team is there to help you make choices that are right for your pet's individual needs. We want your pet to live as long and be as healthy as they can be.

Our Veterinary Technicians - Lisa and Randi, participate in Many continuing education seminars throughout the year to gain as much knowledge as they possibly can about the MANY diet options that are out there.

They know about the needs of growing puppies and kittens, obese animals, senior pets, arthritic pets, pets with special dietary requirements, and much more.
We select a diet that is right for your dog or cat based on their needs, NOT based on brands.
We offer a wide variety of brands and select the one diet we feel is most appropriate for your dog or cats specific requirements.

ASK US what we feed our own pets, AND WHY.
Royal Canin, Rayne Clinical Nutrition, Purina Veterinary Diets, Hills Prescription diets, and more.

Pet Identification Week

April 19-25th is National Pet ID Week. A week to raise awareness on the importance of having your dogs and cats ID's in the event they ever get lost, stolen, or go missing.

There are several methods of  ID'ing your pets.

1) Tags for the collars/harness
2) Tattoos usually done in the ear, or inner thigh.
3) Microchip implanted under the skin.

Of all the methods of identifying your pet - a Microchip is the most effective and permanent.
Over time, tattoos can fade and can be difficult to read due to legibility and location.
Tags and collars can be lost, fall off, or taken off.
Microchips are permanently inserted under the skin at the base of the neck and is easily read by a reader which every veterinary clinic, pet shelter, and humane society has on hand.
When a pet is microchipped, the information is entered into a data base which makes it easy to locate the owners.
This helps get your dog or cat back home to you much sooner.

To have your Dog or Cat Microchipped, Call us at

Heartworm & Lyme Disease Prevention Month

April is Heartworm and Lyme Disease prevention Month.

At Royal City Animal Hospital in Guelph, ON, we have seen many cases of Heartworm and Lyme disease positive dogs over the years, and each year the numbers are growing.

We believe testing your dog annually is the best way to help detect, and prevent the disease.
Part of our annual Wellness examinations, we offer a comprehensive blood testing panel which includes test for both Heartworm and Lyme Disease.
This time of year, we do so much blood work on the dogs in the Guelph area, that our laboratory offers us special discounts on the price of running panels. This is to encourage more and more owners to have their pets tested.
We pass those savings on to our clients.

Call our Veterinary Clinic today to schedule your dog in for a comprehensive annual health and wellness examination - including blood work.

Pet Poison Prevention Week

March 15 - 21 is National Pet Poison Prevention week.

At Royal City Animal Hospital we believe strongly in prevention as the first line of defense in your pet's health care.
Poison prevention is something we have to always be diligent about, as dogs and cats can get into many different things that they shouldn't despite our best intentions.

I am providing you with some great websites for information to have on hand in case something should happen to your pet.

Always call your veterinarian immediately if your dog or cat has ingested something they shouldn't have.

http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poisons/

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control

Also - know the plants you have in your home and whether they are toxic or not to your pets.
http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

If you think your pet has eaten or come in contact with any toxic or potentially hazardous items, please call your Veterinarian immediately to know what to do. Do not wait as many treatments need to be administered quickly in order to save your pet from potential life-threatening complications.

National Pet Sitter's Week

March 1st - 7th is Professional  Pet Sitters Week

As pet owners, we have all been there when you have needed someone to look after your dog or cat while you are away. There is no greater feeling of relief, and happiness than to know you have entrusted your best friends in the hands of someone who is qualified, trustworthy, loyal, and LOVES YOUR PETS.

In Guelph, we are blessed with so many great people and businesses that operate a Pet Sitting service.
One of our favourites to recommend to the pet parents who visit Royal City Animal Hospital, is Heidi's Happy Hounds.
Heidi is a great friend to Royal City Animal Hospital, who trusts us to look after the medical needs of her own dog, and we have known her for many years. She is a gem, and her service to our community is outstanding.

If you need some one to look after your dog, or cat while you are away - give Heidi a call.
